BMI calculator

Calculate your estimated body mass index using your height and weight.

How this is calculated

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes and older adults often sit outside the standard bands without any underlying issue.

Common questions

About the bmi calculator and how to read your result.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. It is a population-level screening measure. Muscular people can read as overweight, and people with low muscle mass can read as healthy while carrying excess fat.

What are the standard bands?

Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range, 25–29.9 is overweight and 30 or above is the obese range. Some ethnic groups have lower thresholds for health risk.

Should I use BMI to set a goal weight?

Use it as one input only. Waist circumference, blood results and how you feel matter more. Set goals with your practitioner.
